Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program
Who are CYMP Mentors?
Mentors are safe adults who provide consistent, one-to-one support to Calaveras youth in achieving their goals and reaching their potential. They spend at least two hours a week with their assigned "mentee" for at least a year. We fully screen, monitor and support our volunteer mentors and mentees, and provide training, field trips and mentor counsel.
Who are CYMP Mentees?
Mentees are motivated young people in 1st through 12th grades who want to make a new friend and enjoy new experiences. Being matched with a mentor is a privilege and a lot of fun. Mentees must live in Calaveras County and be recommended to the Mentoring Program by an adult outside their family.
The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program connects local youth with safe, positive mentors who offer friendship, opportunity and support for making healthy life decisions.
The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program has maintained a reputation for excellence since it was founded in 2003. The program is based on international Best Practices for mentoring programs and continues to use the national Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring Programs to inform program operation. In 2010, a group of community members formed the Calaveras Mentoring Foundation to secure the program's funding and future.
Am I ready to be a mentor?
As you think about becoming a CYMP Mentor, please ask yourself the following questions:
Am I at least 18 years of age?
Am I in a stable place in my life?
Am I able to be supportive and nonjudgmental of other people's decisions and lifestyles?
- Can I make the required commitment to the program, understanding that the screening and matching process could take several months?
- Will I be able to meet with my mentee once a week for at least one year?
- Do I have a valid CA driver’s license?
Am I cool enough?
We are only asking you to be a friend, not a superhero. You and your mentee will share activities you both enjoy and our program staff is dedicated to matching you based on similar interests.
The Mentoring Program provides training and support, fun activities and ideas, and an eager child; you develop a friendship that can last a lifetime.
Not ready yet?
It takes more than mentors for our matches to happen!
