Update Newsletter - Summer 2014

The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.
Steven Spielberg

Thank you

As we prepare to fulfill our pledge to the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program, we can look back on a very successful year. 2013-14 has been a year of growth and new experiences for the Calaveras Mentoring Foundation. The OARS Raffle, Swinging on a Star Golf Outing, Spring Swing, Mokelumne River Rafting Adventure, foundation grants, and our individual donors and Friends Forever together helped us raise over $50,000 for the Mentoring Program. This was our best year yet, and next year promises to be even better!
They've Met Their Match...
Sharon and Diana just celebrated their sixth anniversary as a mentor-mentee match in the Mentoring Program. This makes theirs the longest match ever, and they still see each other every week! They have shared many exciting adventures together, and experiences both happy and sad. By now, Sharon is part of Diana's family and Diana is part of Sharon's. We are very lucky they decided to stay in the Mentoring Program and allow us to support and witness the growth of their strong and beautiful friendship.
... And They Are Still Looking For Theirs
Do you know someone who would make a great mentor? The Mentoring Program always has a waiting list of young people, but lately the waiting list keeps growing longer and mentor recruiting is not keeping up with demand. We have many kids on the waiting list and we need your help finding their mentors. Please  click here to review our waiting list and call Colleen at 209-736-6078 for a quick profile of the kind of volunteer who enjoys mentoring.  Learn more.
Are you among the hundreds of local community members who absolutely love the Murphys Duck Races?  If not, you may be soon - the Calaveras Mentoring Foundation has just taken over this fundraising event and we're making it our own. We'll have three different "heats" onJuly 19 in Murphys Creek, so contestants can vie for the prizes of their choice. Look for our tables at Sierra Hills Market and Main Street in Murphys, or "buy" your duck online at CalaverasMentoring.Org.  Help us make this year the biggest ever for this beloved home-grown tradition!
Building a Foundation

Please welcome new CMF Board Members Alicia Castro and Sue Rivera, and join us in a grateful farewell to Jeff Tozier and Paul Mundy as they complete their terms. At our annual meeting, we elected new officers for the 2014-15 year:

Tom Suarez, President

Peggy Lucas, Past President and Interim Vice President

Alicia Castro, Secretary

Barbaranne Zem, Treasurer

Sue Rivera and Kathryn Eustis, At Large

In this issue, we'd like to introduce you to our Treasurer, Barbaranne Zem.

Barbaranne first became a supporter of the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program when she encouraged her 18-year old daughter Colleen Dolan to become a founding mentor in the program. Barbaranne has been a financial supporter of the program ever since, and was our very first Friend Forever. When she's not balancing the books or creating and improving our online presence, Barbaranne enjoys quilting, swimming, and taking care of her adorable goats.
